Snowpack & River Runoff

How the 2026 snowpack is shaping up across every state we cover — and what those numbers mean for the rivers when the snow comes off. Basin snow-water equivalent against the long-term normal, from NRCS SNOTEL and (in California) the CDEC snow-sensor network. Refreshed daily through the snow season.

What this means for fishing

Snowpack's running thin across the West this year — California are all sitting well below normal. Runoff will peak early, summer flows will thin out faster than usual, and the higher-elevation freestones won't fish for long. Tailwaters and spring creeks will carry more of the season than usual.

If you're planning trips this year: bias toward tailwaters with cold dam releases — the Lower Sac, the Bighorn, the Frying Pan — and spring creeks that aren't snowmelt-driven. Smaller freestones in the lower elevations may warm into marginal water by mid-summer.

Glossary

Snow-water equivalent (SWE)
The depth of water you'd get if the snow melted right now. Basin figures are an average across the reporting stations in that basin.
% of normal
Current basin SWE compared to the long-term norm. 100% is right on the historical curve; 70% means the basin is carrying 30% less snow water than a typical year for this time of year.
Water year
October 1 through September 30. WY2026 runs Oct 1 2025 – Sep 30 2026. Aligns with how snow accumulates and runs off, not the calendar year.
Melt-out date
The typical date a basin finishes melting in a normal year. A late melt-out means runoff drags later and summer flows hold up longer.
Runoff forecast
Projected seasonal streamflow volume at a specific point, issued monthly January–June. Expressed as % of the long-term average for that period.

Snowpack and seasonal runoff figures are sourced from public snow-survey networks (USDA NRCS SNOTEL, California Data Exchange Center). Coverage expands as we add states with snowmelt-driven rivers.
