Overview

Troutline ("we", "us") publishes fly fishing conditions and offers free accounts with a logbook. This page explains what we collect, who can see it, who we share it with, and how you can delete it. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

When you browse the site

You can read every river page without an account. When you do:

  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages and features people use. Until you accept analytics cookies in the banner, it sets no cookies and sends only cookieless counts. Advertising features are always off.
  • Error reports. When a page breaks in your browser, it sends us the error message, the page address and the version of the site, so we can fix it. It does not include your name or account.
  • Maps. Map tiles load from CARTO and Esri. Like any website your browser contacts, they see your IP address.
  • Your browser's storage. We keep a few things in your browser: your cookie choice, whether someone has signed in on this browser before, things you started before signing in, such as a river to save, and an outing you are still writing, so a closed tab does not lose it. They stay on your device until you save the outing or clear your browser's data, even after you sign out, so take care on a shared computer.

We never ask for your device's location.

When you create an account

Accounts are run by Clerk, our sign-in provider. When you sign up, we keep:

  • Your email address and, if you give it, your name. If you sign in with Google, Google shares these with us.
  • The rivers you save.
  • Your profile: your display name, your photo, whether you are an angler or a guide, and your home rivers, if you add them. Your display name starts as your first name and the initial of your last name, from your account or Google. You can change it in your profile.

Clerk sets cookies that keep you signed in. They are needed for the account to work. Clerk also sets a few cookies for every visitor, signed in or not, so the site can tell whether you are signed in.

Your logbook

When you log an outing or a trip, we keep what you enter:

  • The date and time, the water and section, the species you caught with their numbers and lengths, the flies with their sizes and colors, and your notes. For a trip, its name, its notes and the outings in it.
  • The conditions that day, which we add for you: the flow, water temperature, weather and Fish Index. The moon phase is worked out from the date.
  • Waters you add. When you fish a water we do not cover, you add it with a name and a rough place: a pin, which we round to about 1 km before we store it, or a nearby town. The water's name joins a shared list, so other anglers can pick it for their own outings. Its pin or town is seen only by you and by our team, who review new waters. Flies and species you add join shared lists the same way.
  • Photos. We remove all hidden data from every photo we show, including its GPS position. When the photo's file holds them, we also keep its exact GPS position and the time it was taken, as private fields. No one sees them on the site today, including you. We keep them so a later feature can place and date your outings from your photos.

Who can see what

  • Every new outing and trip starts public. You can make it private before you save it, or at any time after.
  • Private outings and trips are visible only to you. A trip and its outings are set apart: making a trip private hides the trip page, but each outing in it keeps its own setting, so make the outings private too if you want them hidden.
  • Public outings and trips are visible to anyone signed in to Troutline, with your display name. They show the date and time, the water and section, the species with their numbers and lengths, the flies with their sizes and colors, your notes, your photos and the conditions that day. A public trip shows its name, its notes and its public outings. "Hide fish counts" on an outing hides the numbers and lengths, but not the species.
  • Share links. Anyone with the link to a public outing or trip, signed in or not, can see a preview: the cover photo and your display name, with the water and date for an outing, or the trip's name, its dates and how many outings it holds for a trip. Private outings and trips never have a preview.
  • Your profile is visible to anyone signed in. It shows your display name, your photo, whether you are an angler or a guide, your home rivers, your public outings and trips, and totals from them, such as the year of your earliest public outing.
  • Your profile photo is also stored with Clerk, which serves it from a web address that does not need you to be signed in. Anyone who has that address can see the photo.
  • Our team can see public outings and trips, and those we have hidden, to keep the site free of spam and abuse.

Shared links and profiles are not listed in search engines.

How we use your information

  • To run the site and your account, and to show your logbook and profile.
  • To send you a welcome email when you sign up. That is the only email we send today. If we start sending news about new waters and features, every such email will have a way to unsubscribe.
  • To understand how the site is used, so we can improve it.
  • To fix errors and keep the site secure.

Who we share it with

We share information only with the companies that help us run the site, and only what each one needs:

  • Clerk, for accounts and sign-in, and to store and serve your profile photo.
  • Amazon Web Services, which hosts the site and stores your data, in the United States.
  • Google, for analytics, and for sign-in if you choose it.
  • Resend, which sends our emails.
  • Open-Meteo, a weather service. When you add a water, it gets the rounded place of your pin, to look up the weather for your outing, or the town you typed, to find where it is. It does not get your name or account.

We may also share information when the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

Keeping and deleting your information

  • You can delete any outing, trip or photo at any time.
  • When you delete your account, from "Manage account" in the account menu or by emailing us, we delete your profile, saved rivers, outings, trips and photos. Waters, flies and species you added to the shared lists stay, so other anglers' outings keep them, but they are no longer linked to you. A water you added keeps its rounded pin or town. Copies can remain in our backups for up to 35 days before they are gone for good.
  • Analytics data is kept by Google for the period set in our Google Analytics account.

Your choices

  • Decline analytics cookies in the banner. The site works the same either way.
  • Make any outing or trip private.
  • Unsubscribe from any news emails, once we send them, with the link in each one.
  • Ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing us.

Children

Troutline is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

We will update this page when what we collect or how we use it changes. The date above shows the latest version. If a change matters to how your information is shared, we will tell account holders by email before it takes effect.
