Stampede Reservoir backs up the Little Truckee River at about 5,900 feet north of Truckee, a big, open lake of about 3,400 acres. It is best known for kokanee and lake trout, which are mostly trolled, but it also holds rainbows and browns that come within reach of a fly rod near the inlets and shorelines.
Fly fishing is best right after ice-off and in fall, when browns and rainbows cruise the shallows near the Little Truckee and Davies Creek inlets: streamers and leeches on a sinking line, and chironomids in calm water. Summer is boat and trolling season. The statewide rules apply on the lake.
