Nevada
Wild Horse Reservoir sits at about 6,200 feet in the high desert north of Elko, a reservoir of about 2,800 acres on the Owyhee River inside Wild Horse State Recreation Area. It holds stocked rainbows, some browns, smallmouth bass and yellow perch, and it is one of northeastern Nevada's main trout lakes.
Rainbows cruise the shallows after ice-off and again in fall, when leeches, woolly buggers and chironomids work from a float tube or a boat. Summer warms the water and the bass take over. Winter brings a popular ice fishery. Black bass are catch and release from March through June.
