Yuba River

California·Sierra Foothills·39.30° N, 121.15° W

The Lower Yuba below Englebright Dam is one of the most accessible quality wild trout streams in Northern California -- less than an hour from Sacramento, no hatchery fish in the system, and wild rainbows averaging 10-16 inches with some pushing 18. The emerald-green tailwater runs cold and clear through a canyon of gold-rush-era hydraulic mining scars and exposed bedrock, giving the river a character that's distinct from anything else in the Sierra foothills. There's also seasonal steelhead from December through April and strong shad runs in late spring that are a blast on light fly tackle.

The Lower Yuba fishes well from Englebright Dam downstream to Daguerre Point Dam, with the best trout water in the upper reaches where flows are coldest. Wading is productive at 500-1,500 CFS, with a mix of riffles, runs, deep pools, and gravel bars. The hatch calendar is strong: Skwala stoneflies and March Browns kick things off in early spring, PMDs and Pinkies overlap through April and May, Golden Stoneflies and caddis carry summer, and fall brings BWOs and the start of steelhead season. The North Yuba, a 37-mile freestone upstream of the reservoir, offers a completely different experience -- remote Sierra canyon water with wild rainbows and browns, more solitude, and a wilderness feel.

Nevada City and Grass Valley are the nearest towns, with Nevada City Anglers serving as the local fly shop. Swimming holes attract recreational crowds on summer weekends, so the best trout fishing happens in the shoulder seasons or on weekday mornings. Regulations on the Lower Yuba require barbless artificial lures, with a daily limit of 2 hatchery trout or steelhead -- but since there's no hatchery, you're effectively practicing catch-and-release. Wild steelhead must be released, and a Steelhead Report Card is required in season. The river's proximity to Sacramento makes it the obvious choice for Valley anglers who want quality wild trout fishing without burning a full day on the drive.
