About Tioga Lake

Tioga Lake sits right on Highway 120 at about 9,650 feet, a mile below the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite. It began as a natural lake, and Southern California Edison raised it with a rockfill dam around 1928, so it now covers about 73 acres and holds about 1,250 acre-feet. It is a put-and-take lake with a wild side. CDFW planted catchable rainbows four times in 2026, from mid June to mid August, and those fish make up most of the catch. Wild brook trout work the shoreline and the inflow, a few browns live here too, and an occasional golden turns up, likely washed down from the lakes above. Most fish run 9 to 12 inches, and a 14-inch brown is a good day.

This is small, clear, cold water, and it fishes best in the first few weeks after ice-out, usually late May to mid June. Planters and brookies cruise the shallows then, and a float tube covers the whole lake in a morning. Kick the northeast shore by the dam and outlet, and the shallow south end where meadow water comes in. Hang a chironomid, Zebra Midge or small beadhead in 16 to 18 under an indicator 6 to 12 feet down, or strip a size 10 olive or black Woolly Bugger slowly on an intermediate line. On calm July and August evenings, midges and caddis bring fish up to a Parachute Adams, Griffith's Gnat or Elk Hair Caddis in 16 to 18. Wind comes over the pass most afternoons and shuts down the surface bite, so fish early and late.

The road and the ice set the season. Highway 120 over the pass usually opens in late May or June and closes with the first big storm in November. It opened May 15 in 2026 and not until July 22 in 2023. Edison draws the lake down over winter to catch spring runoff, so the shoreline sits low early in the season. There is no level gauge, and the nearest fly shops are in Mammoth Lakes and Bridgeport, about 50 minutes away, so bring what you need. The lake is easy to reach and gets plenty of roadside traffic in summer. If it is crowded or blown out, Ellery Lake is a mile downhill and Saddlebag Lake is 2.5 miles up a dirt road.

Species

  • Rainbow Trout
    Abundant · Jun-Sep · 10-12" catchables

CDFW plants, four of them in 2026 between the weeks of June 14 and August 16. Fresh fish school up near the road and spread along the edges within a few days. They take a slow-stripped bugger or a small nymph under an indicator, and plants stop in late August.

  • Brook Trout
    Common · Jun-Oct · 6-11"

Wild fish along the shoreline and at the south-end inflow. They rise to small dries on calm evenings and color up for spawning in late September and October. Most are under 10 inches, so the statewide brook trout bonus applies on top of the 5-trout limit.

  • Brown Trout
    Uncommon · Sep-Oct · 10-16"

A small number of wild browns, the biggest fish in the lake. Look for them along the drop-offs and at the inflow in fall, and swing or strip a small streamer near dawn or dusk.

Dam and outlet

Shore & BoatBeginner

The north lobe, where Tioga Dam holds the lake back and Glacier Creek leaves on its way to Ellery Lake. The water by the dam is likely the deepest in the lake, so this is where the fish go when July and August afternoons turn bright. Kick a float tube along the northeast shore by the outlet, or fish the dam bank from shore.

Best for: A chironomid or small beadhead 6 to 12 feet under an indicator, a slow bugger on an intermediate line at midday in summer

South end shallows

Shore & BoatBeginnerBrown Trout

The far end from the dam, toward Tioga Pass, where meadow water comes in over a shallow bottom. It warms first after the ice goes out, and planters and brookies cruise it in late May and June. In fall the brookies and the few browns push up to the inflow to spawn.

Best for: A Zebra Midge or Pheasant Tail in 16 to 18 at ice-out, small dries on calm evenings, an olive bugger or Matuka in September

Mid-lake drop-offs

Shore & BoatBeginner

The middle of the lake, where both banks fall off from the shallow shelf into the main basin. Plants spread out along these edges after each drop, and brookies hold where the rock meets deeper water. Work the edge slowly from a tube, or walk the bank and cast along it.

Best for: A Hare's Ear or Prince under an indicator along the edge, a dry-dropper from the bank in early summer

Access

  • Tioga Lake CampgroundCampground

Inyo National Forest campground beside the lake, with 13 first-come, first-served sites that you self-register. Potable water, vault toilets and required bear boxes. Usually open from late May or June to October, depending on snow.

  • Tioga DamShore access

Shore fishing off the dam and the outlet bank at the north end. A float tube launched near here reaches the northeast shore by the outlet.

Best seasons

The weeks after ice-out, usually late May to mid June, are the best fly fishing of the year: fish cruise the warming shallows and the south end. July and August fish well at dawn and dusk, when midges and caddis hatch on calm water, while bright windy afternoons push fish deep toward the dam. September until the road closes brings colored-up brookies and the odd brown, after the summer plants have stopped.

Regulations

Tioga Lake has no entry in the CDFW special regulations (14 CCR 7.50(b)), so the statewide lake rule applies (14 CCR 5.85(a)(1)): the lake is open all year, with a limit of 5 trout a day and 10 in possession, and no gear restriction or size limit. The brook trout bonus (14 CCR 5.84) allows 10 more brook trout under 10 inches a day. Many websites give the Eastern Sierra season of late April to November 15, but that is not the legal season here. In practice Highway 120 sets the season: Tioga Road opened May 15 in 2026, June 10 in 2024 and July 22 in 2023, and it closes with the first big snow in November. Night fishing is not allowed in Mono County. No motor rule for the lake was confirmed, so check before you launch anything with a motor. Check the current booklet before you fish.

  • Tioga Lake (Mono County): no special regulation, so the statewide lake rule applies. Open all year, limit 5 trout a day, 10 trout in possession.
  • Brook trout bonus: up to 10 brook trout under 10 inches a day, in addition to the 5-trout limit.
  • No gear restriction and no minimum size. Bait, lures and flies are all legal.
  • Night fishing is prohibited in all Mono County waters except Topaz Lake.
  • The inlet and outlet streams follow the statewide stream rule, not the lake rule: open from the last Saturday in April through November 15 with a 5-trout limit, and artificial lures with barbless hooks, catch and release, the rest of the year.
  • Motor rules for Tioga Lake were not confirmed. Check with the Inyo National Forest before you launch anything with a motor.
  • Trailered boats launched in Mono County need the 2026 Eastern Sierra mussel sticker and an inspection. Hand-launched craft such as float tubes and kayaks must arrive clean, drained and dry. Check the county rules for small craft before you go.
  • Valid California fishing license required for anglers 16 and older

Camping: Tioga Lake Campground, an Inyo National Forest campground beside the lake, has 13 small first-come, first-served sites ($30 a night in 2026) with water, vault toilets and required bear boxes. It usually opens in late May or June and closes in October. Junction and Ellery Lake campgrounds are a mile or two down the highway, and Lee Vining has motels and more campgrounds along Lee Vining Creek.

The lake sits right on Highway 120, just outside the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite and about 12 miles up from Lee Vining and US 395. Roadside pullouts give easy shore and float-tube access, and there is no boat ramp. The east side of the pass can open a little before the park road, as it did in 2026. Edison draws the lake down over winter, so expect a low, rocky shoreline right after ice-out.
