About June Lake

June Lake is the first lake you hit coming up CA-158 from the south end of the loop, and it is the big one: 320 acres of cold, very clear glacial water at 7,621 feet, dropping to about 168 feet at its deepest. CDFW planted it six times between the April opener and late September in 2026, and the June Lake Loop Trophy Trout Program, Mono County and June Lake Marina put bigger rainbows on top of that, some in the 3 to 8 pound range. A small population of Lahontan cutthroat and a few large browns are the fish worth hoping for.

For a fly rod this is boat and float tube water. The far shore across from the road falls away fast, and the trout only hold shallow early and late in the season and in low light. From the opener into June, and again in October, work the tule and weed edges on the west shore and the shelf off the beach with an intermediate line and a leech, a Woolly Bugger or a Grey Ghost, or hang a chironomid under an indicator in 10 to 20 feet. Callibaetis and damsel nymphs fish well over the shelves in June and early July. By midsummer the fish slide deep through the middle of the day, so fish the first and last hour or go down with a full sinking line along the drop-offs. The water is clear enough that fluorocarbon tippet in 4x or 5x makes a difference, and the afternoon wind comes up most days.

Most of the traffic is trollers and bait anglers working out of the two marinas at the village end, so a fly angler is in the minority. The season runs from the last Saturday in April to November 15 with a 5-trout limit, and the marinas shut down in mid-October, which leaves the last month to people with their own boat or a tube. Every trailered boat in Mono County now needs an Eastern Sierra mussel sticker before it launches. If June is crowded or blowing, Gull Lake is a few minutes west and is the better float tube lake.

Species

  • Rainbow Trout
    Abundant · Late Apr-Jun, Sep-Nov · 10-14" planters, trophy plants 3-8 lb

Stocked by CDFW through the season, with private trophy plants from the June Lake Loop Trophy Trout Program, Mono County and June Lake Marina on top. The fish nearly everyone catches.

  • Lahontan Cutthroat Trout
    Uncommon · Spring and fall · 12-20"

June is the loop lake with cutthroat, though the population is small. They cruise the shallow edges in spring and fall. Release them.

  • Brown Trout
    Uncommon · Oct-Nov, low light · 16-26"

Few but large. Streamers along the edges at first and last light in the fall give you the best shot. Release them.

West shore tules

Shore & BoatBeginnerRainbow Trout

The tule and weed edges along the road side of the lake, out from Boulder Lodge and down toward Big Rock. Shallow by June Lake standards, and the place trout cruise in spring and fall.

Best for: Leeches and chironomids from a float tube in May, June and October

Beach drop-off

Shore & BoatBeginner

The sandy shelf off June Lake Beach at the north end, where the shallows fall away into deep water. Fish cruise the edge of the drop early and late in the day.

Best for: Indicator chironomids and slow-stripped leeches on the shelf edge, shore or tube

The steep wall

BoatIntermediate

The far shore across from the road, where boulders and rock outcrops drop fast into deep water. Little room for shore fishing, and the fish hold down the face through summer.

Best for: Full sinking lines along the drop-offs in July and August

Marina end

Shore & BoatBeginner

The south end by the village, the outlet to Gull Lake and the two marinas. Busy with trollers and rental boats through the summer, quieter after the marinas close in mid-October.

Best for: Streamers on an intermediate line at first light, and late-season tube fishing

Best seasons

The opener in late April through June, when the trout are shallow and new plants are going in, and again from September to the close on November 15. July and August fish best at first and last light or deep on a sinking line.

Regulations
