About Gull Lake

Gull Lake is the small one on the June Lake Loop: about 65 acres and 70 feet at its deepest, tucked in beside June Lake village at 7,618 feet. It is a natural, spring-fed lake with no dam. June Lake's outlet comes in at the east end, and Reversed Creek drains it out the west end, flowing back toward the crest to meet Rush Creek above Silver Lake. CDFW planted it six times between the late-April opener and the end of August in 2026, and the June Lake Loop Trophy Trout Program and Mono County add trophy rainbows on top. A few browns live here too, and the lake has a long memory for big fish: a 13 lb 3 oz rainbow and a 6 lb 12 oz brook trout from 1968.

You can cross it in a float tube in a few minutes, Reversed Peak and the aspens block some of the afternoon wind, and the north shore is lined with tules and weed beds that drop into the middle. Fish it like any small Sierra stillwater. In the morning, hang a chironomid under an indicator off the weed edge or over the hole by the marina. Through June and July, strip a damsel or callibaetis nymph in size 12 to 14 slowly along the tules and around Big Rock on an intermediate or Type I line. In August the trout drop to the drop-off by midday, so fish early and late or go down. From September to the close, streamers and leeches between Big Rock and the aspens move the bigger fish. The water is a little less clear than June or Silver, and 4x tippet is usually enough.

In summer it gets busy. Most of the loop's rental boats and bait anglers end up at the marina end, so expect company there and look for room along the north shore. The 10 mph speed limit keeps it quieter than Grant. The season runs from the last Saturday in April to November 15 with a 5-trout limit. A trailered boat needs an Eastern Sierra mussel sticker, and a float tube or kayak, the right boats for this lake anyway, should arrive clean, drained and dry.

Species

  • Rainbow Trout
    Abundant · Late Apr-Jun, Sep-Nov · 10-14" planters, trophy plants 3-5 lb and up

CDFW plants through the season, and the June Lake Loop Trophy Trout Program and Mono County add trophy rainbows. Nearly every fish you hook will be one of these. The lake record is 13 lb 3 oz.

  • Brown Trout
    Uncommon · Sep-Nov, low light · 14-24"

Not many, and they feed at first and last light. A streamer worked between Big Rock and the aspens in the fall is the best chance at one.

  • Brook Trout
    Rare · Spring and fall · 8-12"

The lake gave up a 6 lb 12 oz brook trout in 1968, but brookies are rare now and are not planted. Count one as a bonus.

The Rock

Shore & BoatBeginner

Big Rock on the west shore, under the aspens, where a large boulder sits next to a drop-off into deeper water. The best-known spot on the lake, so someone is often on it at first light.

Best for: Damsel nymphs in June and July, and streamers early and late in the fall

North shore tules

BoatBeginner

The tule-lined north and northwest shore, with weed beds that fall off into the middle of the lake. Hard to fish from the bank, easy from a tube.

Best for: Callibaetis and damsels along the weed edge from a float tube, June and July

Marina hole and inlet

Shore & BoatBeginner

The east end, where the outlet of June Lake comes in, and the deep hole just off the marina. Busy with rental boats and bait anglers in summer, but it holds fish all season.

Best for: Indicator chironomids and leeches from the opener into June

Access

From the opener in late April through June, when the trout cruise the weed edges and fresh plants are going in, and again from September to the close on November 15. In July and August, fish the first and last hours or sink a fly to the drop-off.

Regulations

Gull Lake has its own entry in the CDFW inland regulations (section 7.50(b)): open from the last Saturday in April through November 15, with a 5-trout limit. Bait, lures and flies are all legal. Reversed Creek, the outlet on the west end, is a stream with its own rules, so check them before you fish it. Confirm the current regulations before fishing.

  • Season: last Saturday in April through November 15
  • Daily limit 5 trout, no minimum size
  • Bait, lures and flies are all legal
  • Boat speed limit 10 mph
  • Trailered boats launched in Mono County need the 2026 Eastern Sierra mussel sticker and an inspection. Hand-launched craft such as float tubes and kayaks must arrive clean, drained and dry. Check the county rules for small craft before you go.
  • Anglers 16 and older need a valid California fishing license

Fly shops

  • The TroutfitterMammoth Lakes

Camping: Gull Lake Campground, a Forest Service site, sits on the south shore. June Lake village is right next door, with cabins, motels and more campgrounds around the loop, and Mammoth Lakes has the rest.

Gull Lake Marina at the east end has the launch ramp, slips, tackle and rental boats, kayaks and paddleboards from the opener into fall. The carry-on launch at Gull Meadows on the west end is the easy put-in for a float tube or kayak, and the picnic area gives shore anglers room along the bank.
