About Ellery Lake

Ellery Lake is the granite bowl Highway 120 skirts about a mile below Tioga Lake, at roughly 9,490 feet. Southern California Edison holds it behind Rhinedollar Dam, an 18-foot rockfill dam at the east end, as the forebay for its Poole Powerhouse, and at full pool it covers 61 acres. Because the powerhouse intake sits right here, the level moves less through the season than it does at Tioga or Saddlebag, so you do not start June looking at a ring of bare rock. CDFW plants catchable rainbows in summer, wild brook trout live along the shore and in the Lee Vining Creek inlet, and a few browns round it out. Most rainbows run 10 to 13 inches. A fish over a pound is a good one, and a brown is a bonus.

The lake fishes in two halves. The west end, where Lee Vining Creek comes in, is shallow, and the east side by the dam drops to 15 to 30 feet. For a few weeks after ice-out, usually late May to mid June, the larger rainbows patrol the shoreline and the inlet, and a float tube put in near the dam or at the west end gets you over them. Hang a size 16 to 18 chironomid or small beadhead under an indicator just off the drop-offs, or strip a small olive or black leech on an intermediate line. Brookies hold where the creek current fades into the lake, so fish the mouth before anything else. On calm summer evenings, midges and caddis bring fish up to a Griffith's Gnat, Parachute Adams or Elk Hair Caddis in 16 to 18. By midday in July and August, fish slide toward the deeper water by the dam.

This is roadside water, and bait anglers line the bank for a few days after every plant. Afternoon wind off the pass is the rule, so the first and last hours of light are the ones to plan around. The legal season is open all year, but the road decides when you can actually fish: Highway 120 over Tioga Pass usually opens in late May or June and closes in November, and it opened May 15 in 2026. Ellery sits about 160 feet below Tioga Lake and usually loses its ice first. There is no level gauge or water temperature station, and the nearest fly shops are in Mammoth Lakes and Bridgeport, about 50 minutes away. If the lake is busy, Tioga Lake is a mile up the road, Saddlebag Lake is about 3 miles away, and Lee Vining Creek below the dam holds small wild trout.

Species

  • Rainbow Trout
    Abundant · Jun-Sep · 10-13" catchables

CDFW plants through the summer: the weeks of May 10 and July 12 in 2026, and three times between late July and the end of August in 2025. The first plant can land before the park road opens. Fresh fish stay near the road for a few days, then spread along the drop-offs, where a small nymph under an indicator or a slow leech takes them.

  • Brook Trout
    Common · Jun-Oct · 6-11"

Wild fish along the rocky shore and stacked in the Lee Vining Creek inflow, especially as runoff pushes into the west end in early summer. They rise to small dries in the evening and color up in fall. Most are under 10 inches, so the statewide brook trout bonus applies.

  • Brown Trout
    Uncommon · Sep-Oct · 12-18"

A few wild browns, reported now and then in fall catches. Look for them at the inlet and along the dam face in September and October, and fish a small streamer early or late in the day.

Areas

Lee Vining Creek inlet

Shore & BoatBeginner

The narrow west arm, where Lee Vining Creek pours in from Saddlebag Lake over a shallow bottom. The creek carries food into the lake all summer, and brookies sit in the current where it slows. Right after the ice goes out, the bigger rainbows cruise in here too. Start at the creek mouth, then work out along the seam where moving water meets still water.

Best for: A beadhead Hare's Ear or Prince in 16 to 18 drifted into the inflow, small dries on calm evenings, a little olive bugger in fall

Middle drop-offs

Shore & BoatBeginner

The widest part of the lake, between the shallow west end and the dam. The bottom steps down from the rocky edges into deeper water, and new plants spread along that edge within days of each drop. A float tube lets you sit over the break and fish it slowly, and a long cast from the bank reaches it in places.

Best for: A chironomid in 16 to 18 under an indicator on the break, a slow black leech on an intermediate line

Rhinedollar Dam end

Shore & BoatBeginnerRainbow Trout

The east end, where Rhinedollar Dam holds the lake and Edison takes water for Poole Powerhouse. The water here runs 15 to 30 feet deep, the most in the lake, so this is where trout hold on bright summer afternoons. Fish the dam face from shore, or launch a tube nearby and work the steeper banks.

Best for: A nymph or leech fished deep at midday in July and August, a small streamer along the dam face in September

Access

  • Ellery Lake CampgroundCampground

Inyo National Forest campground just west of the lake, near the Lee Vining Creek inlet. 12 first-come, first-served sites at about 9,500 feet, with water, vault toilets and required bear boxes. $28 a night plus $10 for an extra vehicle.

  • Rhinedollar DamShore access

Shore fishing over the deepest water in the lake at the east end. A float tube launched near the dam reaches the steeper east banks.

Ice-out to mid June is the prime window: bigger rainbows cruise the shoreline and the Lee Vining Creek inlet, and brookies feed in the inflow. Late June and July fish well at the west end as runoff carries food in. In late July and August, fish the evening midge and caddis rise and go deep by the dam at midday. September until the road closes is quiet after Labor Day, with colored-up brookies and the odd brown near the inlet and the dam.

Regulations

Ellery Lake has no entry in the CDFW special regulations (14 CCR 7.50(b)), so the statewide lake rule applies (14 CCR 5.85(a)(1)): the lake is open all year, with a limit of 5 trout a day and 10 in possession, and no gear restriction or size limit. The brook trout bonus (14 CCR 5.84) allows 10 more brook trout under 10 inches a day. Many websites give the Eastern Sierra season of late April to November 15, but that is not the legal season here. In practice Highway 120 sets the season: Tioga Road opened May 15 in 2026, June 10 in 2024 and July 22 in 2023, and it closes with the first big snow in November. Night fishing is not allowed in Mono County. No motor rule for the lake was confirmed. Check the current booklet before you fish.

  • Ellery Lake (Mono County): no special regulation, so the statewide lake rule applies. Open all year, limit 5 trout a day, 10 trout in possession.
  • Brook trout bonus: up to 10 brook trout under 10 inches a day, in addition to the 5-trout limit.
  • No gear restriction and no minimum size. Bait, lures and flies are all legal.
  • Night fishing is prohibited in all Mono County waters except Topaz Lake.
  • Lee Vining Creek above and below the lake follows the statewide stream rule, not the lake rule: open from the last Saturday in April through November 15 with a 5-trout limit, and artificial lures with barbless hooks, catch and release, the rest of the year.
  • Trailered boats launched in Mono County need the 2026 Eastern Sierra mussel sticker and an inspection. Hand-launched craft such as float tubes and kayaks must arrive clean, drained and dry. Check the county rules for small craft before you go.
  • Valid California fishing license required for anglers 16 and older

Camping: Ellery Lake Campground, an Inyo National Forest campground just west of the lake, has 12 first-come, first-served sites ($28 a night in 2026, $10 per extra vehicle) with water, vault toilets and required bear boxes. Junction and Tioga Lake campgrounds are a short drive up the highway, and Lee Vining has motels and more campgrounds along Lee Vining Creek.

The lake sits beside Highway 120, about 10 miles up from Lee Vining and US 395 and about 2 miles east of the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite. Roadside pullouts give shore access, and a float tube or small hand-launched boat goes in near the dam or the west end. There is no boat ramp. Because Edison draws its powerhouse water from here, the shoreline stays closer to full than at Tioga or Saddlebag.
