Lewiston Lake is the afterbay below Trinity Dam, about 600 acres at 1,900 feet above the town of Lewiston. Cold water released from the bottom of Trinity Lake keeps it cool all summer, which makes it a trout lake when most lakes at this elevation are too warm. It holds rainbows, browns and brook trout, and its upper end, where the cold water enters, is narrow and river-like.
The upper lake near the Trinity Dam outflow fishes best for fly anglers, with nymphs, emergers and small streamers from a pram or float tube, and dry flies on summer evenings. The level stays fairly steady, since it is a regulating reservoir. The statewide rules apply on the lake, and the Trinity River below Lewiston Dam has its own salmon and steelhead rules.
