About Convict Lake

Convict Lake sits in a granite bowl under Mount Morrison at about 7,580 feet, two miles off US-395 across from the Mammoth airport. It is small, about 170 acres, but it drops to around 140 feet, and the water is clear enough to see 30 feet down. Most of what you catch is planted rainbows: CDFW plants it through the season, and the resort adds its own trophy rainbows a few times a year, so a 3 to 8 pound fish is a real chance. The browns are fewer than they were, but they are why the lake still gets talked about — the lake record is a 19.5 pound brown from 1956.

This is not Crowley. It is a deep, rocky lake with little weed, and the fish hold along the drop-offs rather than over flats. Bring an intermediate or full-sinking line and count a black, brown or olive leech or bugger down to the ledge, or hang a chironomid under an indicator 8 to 20 feet down just off the edge. In spring a pink or white bugger fished deep passes for rainbow fry. A float tube or a rented boat from the marina gets you to the ledges. The inlet at the south end, where Convict Creek comes in off the wilderness, holds the bigger fish, and you can walk there on the trail that circles the lake. The weeks after the late-April opener and the fall run-up to the November 15 close fish best. In midsummer the trout go deep by late morning, so fish early and late.

The trade-offs are crowds and wind. The bridge, the marina jetty and the shore by the parking lot fill with bait anglers after each plant, and the spring and fall derby weekends are busier still. Wind comes down the canyon most afternoons. The lake is on Inyo National Forest land, and Convict Lake Resort runs the marina, store and cabins. Ask the resort about motor rules before you bring your own boat, and carry the 2026 mussel sticker on a trailered boat and bring any craft clean, drained and dry. Stay off the ice in winter. If the lake is packed, Crowley Lake and Hot Creek are both within 15 minutes.

Species

  • Rainbow Trout
    Abundant · Late Apr-Jun, Sep-Nov · 10-16" planters, trophy plants 3-8 lb

Planted by CDFW through the season, plus resort trophy rainbows several times a year, including an early-September plant. The lake record is about 13 pounds.

  • Brown Trout
Uncommon · Oct-Nov, and just after the opener · 14-24", rarely larger

Fewer than in the past, but they are what big-fish anglers come for. Look for them in the deep south end and off the inlet, on streamers that look like planters.

  • Brook Trout
    Rare · Summer · 6-10"

Mostly in Convict Creek above and below the lake. A brookie in the lake is a bonus, and it counts toward the 5-trout limit.

Marina and outlet

Shore & BoatBeginner

The north-end bay by the marina, the jetty and the outlet into Convict Creek. A short shelf drops off fast into deep water, and this is where the CDFW and resort plants go in.

Best for: Fresh planters after a plant, chironomids and small leeches on the edge of the shelf

Southeast shore

Shore & BoatIntermediate

Boulder shoreline along the loop trail with a sharp ledge close in. Planters spread along this side of the lake once the crowd at the marina thins them out.

Best for: Leeches and buggers counted down along the ledge on an intermediate line

South end and inlet

Shore & BoatIntermediateBrown Trout

The head of the lake, where Convict Creek comes in off the wilderness and the bottom falls away fast. The bigger rainbows and the few browns left tend to hold here and in the deep south basin.

Best for: Bigger fish on streamers and leeches with a sinking line, best in fall

Access

  • Convict Lake Campground rampBoat ramp

North end by the outlet, next to the Convict Lake Resort marina, which rents boats in the fishing season. A trailered boat needs the 2026 mussel sticker and an inspection, and any craft should arrive clean, drained and dry.

  • Convict Lake CampgroundCampground

Inyo National Forest, by the outlet. Reserve on recreation.gov. Open late April to late October.

Fall first: September to the November 15 close brings the resort's trophy plants, the best shot at a brown and quieter weekdays. Then the opener in late April through June, when fish are shallow and spread along the shore. Summer fishes in the mornings and evenings, deep along the ledges. Overcast, calm mornings beat bright, windy afternoons on water this clear.

Regulations

Convict Lake follows its own entry in the CDFW special regulations, section 7.50(b)(30): a closed season from November 16 to the last Saturday in April and a 5-trout limit, with no gear restriction. Convict Creek above and below the lake has different rules, and part of it is closed all year. Confirm the current booklet before you fish.

  • Convict Lake: open from the last Saturday in April through November 15, limit 5 trout. The 2027 opener is April 24.
  • The statewide bonus brook trout limit does not apply here, so brook trout count toward the 5
  • Convict Creek, the U.C. study area, from about 1/2 mile above the US-395 bridge upstream about 1/2 mile: closed to all fishing all year
  • Convict Creek below the U.C. study area to Crowley Lake: open the Saturday before Memorial Day through September 30, limit 5 trout
  • Convict Creek above the U.C. study area, including the inlet and the creek between the lake outlet and the study area: statewide stream rules. Last Saturday in April through November 15, limit 5 trout. November 16 to the Friday before the last Saturday in April, artificial lures with barbless hooks only, limit 0 trout.
  • Night fishing is prohibited in all Mono County waters except Topaz Lake
  • Trailered boats launched in Mono County need the 2026 Eastern Sierra mussel sticker and an inspection. Hand-launched craft such as float tubes and kayaks must arrive clean, drained and dry. Check the county rules for small craft before you go. Check motor rules with Convict Lake Resort before launching.
  • Valid California fishing license required for anglers 16 and older

The creek above the study area is the only water near the lake open in winter, for zero-kill fishing with barbless artificials. Winter access depends on the road.
