About Wynoochee River

The Wynoochee comes out of the southern Olympics, through Wynoochee Lake and its dam, and runs south, about 60 miles in all, to the Chehalis at Montesano. The dam is what sets it apart. It was built for flood control and water supply, and it evens out the flows below it, so the Wynoochee holds its shape after rain better than the Satsop or the Humptulips, and it is often fishable when they are not. Below the dam it is a mix of tight timber-country water up high and long runs and deep holes lower down, nearly all of it reached through private and timber company land.

It has steelhead almost all year. Summer steelhead are in from June and hold through the fall, a rarity on this side of the Peninsula. Winter steelhead come in two waves: a mostly hatchery run that enters in December and peaks in late January, and a mostly wild run that enters in January and peaks in late February. The season runs to March 31, with selective gear rules above Old White Bridge from January. Coho and a modest number of Chinook come in during October and November.

Read the flows at the gauge above Black Creek, at the bottom of the classic drift. Because the dam smooths the water, the window is easy to read: about 600 to 1,900 CFS fishes, around 1,700 is good, and above about 1,900 it is too high to fish a fly well. Past about 3,000 it is out. Most anglers here fish gear, but the runs from Old White Bridge to Black Creek swing well, and summer steelhead in the upper river take a fly in clear, low water.

7400 Line to Old White Bridge

Wade & FloatSteelhead

The upper river below the dam, from the launch just below the 7400 line bridge off Wynoochee Valley Road down to Old White Bridge. Tighter, clearer water through timber company land, with fewer boats. Summer steelhead hold here through the summer and fall, and wild winter steelhead push up late in the season. From January through March it is selective gear only, and bait is banned from mid-September through November.

Best for: Summer steelhead in clear, low water, and late wild winter steelhead under selective-gear rules.

Old White Bridge to Black Creek

FloatSteelhead

The classic Wynoochee day: eight to ten miles of runs and deep holes from Old White Bridge down to the Black Creek launch, where the decision gauge sits. Hatchery winter steelhead come through from December and peak in January, wild fish follow and peak in late February, and summer steelhead are in from June. The Old White Bridge ramp has been closed for repairs, so check WDFW before you plan to launch there.

Best for: Winter and summer steelhead on the swing or under an indicator. The river's main drift.

Black Creek to the Chehalis

FloatSteelhead · Salmon

The last five miles past Montesano to the Chehalis, a short float from the Black Creek launch. Slower water that gets the first fresh fish: fall coho and Chinook salmon from October, and winter steelhead from December. Night closure, single barbless hooks and the anti-snagging rule apply from October through November.

Best for: Fresh coho salmon in the fall and early winter steelhead, on a short float.

Best seasons

January and February for winter steelhead: hatchery fish peak in late January and wild fish in late February, with the season open to March 31. June through October for summer steelhead. October and November for coho. Read the gauge above Black Creek: about 600 to 1,900 CFS, with around 1,700 good, and above 1,900 a fly gets hard to fish well. Past about 3,000 it is out. The dam smooths the rises, so it is often the first river in the area back in shape.

Regulations

The Wynoochee runs under WDFW's permanent coastal steelhead rules, finalized in November 2025 and in force from February 2026. From the mouth to the 7400 line bridge it is open from the Saturday before Memorial Day through March 31. Above Old White Bridge it is selective gear from January through March. Salmon seasons and limits can change each year and by emergency rule, so check WDFW before every trip.

  • Mouth to the 7400 line bridge: open the Saturday before Memorial Day through March 31
  • Mouth to Old White Bridge: single-point barbless hooks, night closure and the anti-snagging rule October 1 through November 30; selective gear rules August 1 through September 30
  • Old White Bridge to the 7400 line bridge: single-point barbless hooks August 16 through November 30; no bait September 16 through November 30; selective gear rules January 1 through March 31
  • Release wild steelhead (adipose fin present) and wild rainbow trout
  • Release cutthroat trout November 1 through March 31; 14-inch minimum the rest of the season
  • Salmon (mouth to Old White Bridge), October: daily limit 6, up to 2 adults; release adult Chinook
  • Salmon (mouth to Old White Bridge), November 1 through December 31: daily limit 6, up to 1 adult; release Chinook
  • Washington freshwater license and a catch record card for steelhead and salmon

Salmon seasons on the Grays Harbor rivers are set each year with the tribes, and in-season changes are common. The upper river runs through Green Diamond timber land, which closes in fire season; the WDFW launch below the 7400 line stays open by lease, but check before you go.

Camping: Montesano and Aberdeen have motels, fuel and groceries. Lake Sylvia State Park, just above Montesano, has a campground, and the Forest Service Coho Campground sits on Wynoochee Lake above the dam.

Wynoochee Valley Road runs north from Montesano along the river. The Black Creek launch, by the gauge, ends the classic drift. The Old White Bridge ramp has been closed for repairs, so check WDFW before you plan a launch there. The upper WDFW launch, opened in 2018 on Green Diamond land by lease, sits just below the 7400 line bridge about 20 miles north of Montesano. Nearly all the river runs through private and timber company land, so stay on public access.
