About Green River

The Green runs out of the Cascades through Howard Hanson Dam, a Corps of Engineers flood-control dam, then through the Green River Gorge and the farms of the Green Valley to Auburn and north through Kent, where it becomes the Duwamish and reaches Elliott Bay. It is an urban river for most of its fished length, and a hatchery river: the Soos Creek hatchery in Auburn and the Icy Creek ponds upriver raise fall Chinook, coho and steelhead. Because the dam smooths the flows and the river sits half an hour from Seattle and Tacoma, it is one of the easiest salmon rivers in the region to fish on short notice.

The salmon seasons step up the river with the run. The Kent reach below South 212th Street opens August 20, the first water for fall Chinook, and there you must keep the first 2 adult Chinook you catch. From South 212th to the Highway 18 bridge in Auburn, salmon open September 16 for coho and chum, with Chinook released. The short stretch between the Highway 18 and Auburn–Black Diamond Road bridges is closed. Above it, through the Green Valley to the Tacoma watershed boundary, salmon open November 1. Pink salmon pack the river in odd years, and chum peak in November and December. Game fish close December 31, so the hatchery summer steelhead from June through fall are the river's steelhead fishery, with winter steelhead open only in December.

Read the flows at the Auburn gauge. Releases from Howard Hanson keep the river from dropping too low in late summer and cap the peaks in winter. As a rough guide it fishes from about 400 to 1,500 CFS, and past about 3,000 it is high and colored. Chum and coho hold in the slow water of the Kent and Auburn reaches; the Green Valley above Auburn has the most natural riffles and runs.

Species

  • Chinook Salmon (fall run)
    Primary (hatchery) · Late Aug-Oct · 10-30 lb

Soos Creek hatchery fish. Only the Kent reach keeps Chinook, from August 20, and anglers must keep the first 2 adults caught. Release Chinook above South 212th Street.

  • Coho Salmon
    Common · Sep-Nov · 6-12 lb

Coho stage near the Soos Creek mouth. Up to 3 adults of coho and chum combined.

  • Chum Salmon
    Common · Nov-Dec · 8-15 lb

The late-fall fish, peaking in November and holding into December.

  • Pink Salmon
    Abundant (odd years) · Aug-Sep · 3-6 lb

Huge odd-year runs fill the Kent and Auburn reaches. Small pink flies work well.

  • Steelhead (summer-run)
    Common (hatchery) · Jun-Oct · 5-10 lb

Stocked at Soos Creek and Icy Creek. Keep hatchery fish; release wild ones. Best in the Green Valley above Auburn.

  • Winter Steelhead
    Present (hatchery) · Dec · 6-12 lb

Icy Creek hatchery winter fish come in from December, but game fish close December 31.

  • Coastal Cutthroat Trout
    Common · Aug-Oct · 8-16"

Sea-run cutthroat in late summer and fall. 14-inch minimum.

Sections

3 reaches

South 212th Street to Tukwila

WadeSalmon

The lower Green through Kent to Tukwila, slow and channelized between levees with trail access along the banks. It opens to salmon on August 20, the first water to see fall Chinook, and anglers must keep the first 2 adult Chinook they catch. Coho, chum and odd-year pink salmon follow.

Best for: Fall Chinook salmon from late August, then coho, chum and odd-year pinks.

Highway 18 to South 212th Street

WadeSalmon

From the Highway 18 bridge in Auburn, past the Auburn gauge, north through the Kent valley to the South 212th Street bridge. The short stretch between the Auburn–Black Diamond Road and Highway 18 bridges is closed. This reach opens to salmon on September 16 for coho and chum (release Chinook), and pink salmon pack it in odd years. Night closure and the anti-snagging rule apply.

Best for: Coho, chum and odd-year pink salmon from mid-September, close to town.

Flaming Geyser to Auburn–Black Diamond Road

Wade & FloatSteelhead · Salmon

The Green Valley reach from Flaming Geyser State Park down past Whitney Bridge and the Crisp Creek gauge to the Auburn–Black Diamond Road bridge. Farmland and parkland, with gravel runs and trails down from the state park. Summer steelhead hold here from June, and it opens to salmon only from November 1, for coho and chum; release Chinook. The water within 150 feet of the Keta Creek mouth is closed.

Best for: Summer steelhead from June, and late coho and chum salmon in November and December.

Best seasons

Late August through October for fall Chinook in Kent, September through November for coho, November and December for chum, and August and September for odd-year pinks. June through October for summer steelhead. Read the Auburn gauge: as a rough guide about 400 to 1,500 CFS, and past about 3,000 it is high and colored. Howard Hanson Dam smooths the flows, so it holds shape better than most Puget Sound rivers.
