About Satsop River

The Satsop is the Grays Harbor river the crowds skip. Its East and West Forks come down out of the southern Olympics and the timberland north of Elma, meet about six miles above the Chehalis, and run a short main stem past the Highway 12 bridges to the big river at Satsop. The East Fork carries most of the fishing, because the Bingham Creek hatchery sits upstream of Schafer State Park and draws hatchery coho and winter steelhead up it. It is free-flowing and rain-fed, so it rises and falls fast: a good storm brings fish in, and the water can drop back into shape within a couple of days.

Fall is the main event. Chinook start in late summer and are best in September and October. Coho are the most dependable run, coming in strong in September and holding through November. Chum overlap with them and peak from October into December. Winter steelhead arrive in November and peak in December and January on both forks, and the season runs to March 31, with selective gear rules from January to protect the wild fish.

Read the flows at the Satsop gauge by the Highway 12 bridges, below the forks. As a rough guide, the river fishes from about 700 to 2,500 CFS, and past about 4,500 it is high and brown. In low summer and early-fall water the East Fork is a walk-and-wade river around the state park, and boats need a bump of rain to float it. Swing or strip bright coho flies and chum patterns in the fall, and swing for steelhead in the green water on the drop.

Species

  • Coho Salmon
    Primary · Sep-Nov · 6-14 lb

The most reliable run. Hatchery coho head up the East Fork to Bingham Creek. Strip or swing bright flies to holding fish.

  • Chum Salmon
    Common · Oct-Dec · 8-15 lb

Chum overlap with the coho and peak from October into December, the biggest fish you can keep in late fall.

  • Chinook Salmon (fall run)
    Common · Sep-Oct · 10-30 lb

Fall Chinook come in from late summer. Current rules release adult Chinook, so treat them as catch-and-release.

  • Winter Steelhead
    Primary (hatchery and wild) · Dec-Mar (peak Dec-Jan) · 6-15 lb

Arrive in November and peak in December and January on both forks. Release wild fish. Selective gear rules from January.

  • Coastal Cutthroat Trout
    Common · Aug-Oct · 8-16"

Sea-run cutthroat in late summer and early fall, on small streamers in the East Fork runs. Release cutthroat from November through March.

East Fork — Schafer State Park to the Forks

Wade & FloatSteelhead · Salmon

The East Fork from Schafer State Park down to where it meets the West Fork. The Bingham Creek hatchery sits upstream of the park, so hatchery coho and winter steelhead come up the East Fork, and this is where most anglers go. Boats put in at the park or near Decker Creek, and in low summer water it is a walk-and-wade river. Selective gear rules apply from January through March.

Best for: Winter steelhead and coho salmon headed for the Bingham Creek hatchery, with chum salmon in late fall.

The Forks to the Chehalis

FloatSteelhead · Salmon

The short main stem from the forks past the Highway 12 bridges, where the gauge sits, to the Chehalis near Satsop. Bigger, slower water with launches at Double Bridges by the highway and at Fuller Bridge near the mouth. Early fall coho and Chinook salmon stage here before they move up, chum salmon pile in from October, and winter steelhead pass through from November.

Best for: Staging fall coho and chum salmon, and winter steelhead moving up from the Chehalis.

Best seasons

September through November for coho, October through December for chum, September and October for fall Chinook. December and January for winter steelhead, with the season open to March 31. Read the Satsop gauge at the Highway 12 bridges: roughly 700 to 2,500 CFS is the fishing range, and past about 4,500 it is high and brown. It rises and falls fast, so watch for the drop a day or two after a storm.

Regulations

The Satsop and its East Fork run under WDFW's permanent coastal steelhead rules, finalized in November 2025 and in force from February 2026. From the mouth to the bridge at Schafer State Park the river is open from the Saturday before Memorial Day through March 31, with selective gear rules in August and September and again from January through March. Salmon seasons and limits can change each year and by emergency rule, so check WDFW before every trip.

  • Mouth to the bridge at Schafer State Park: open the Saturday before Memorial Day through March 31
  • Night closure and single-point barbless hooks August 16 through November 30
  • Selective gear rules August 1 through September 30 and January 1 through March 31
  • Release wild steelhead (adipose fin present) and wild rainbow trout
  • Release cutthroat trout November 1 through March 31; 14-inch minimum the rest of the season
  • Salmon, October: daily limit 6, up to 2 adults; release adult Chinook
  • Salmon, November 1 through December 31: daily limit 6, up to 1 adult; release Chinook
  • Schafer State Park bridge up to the Bingham Creek hatchery: statewide rules with a 14-inch cutthroat minimum, plus night closure and single barbless hooks August 16 through October 31; the water near the hatchery dam is reserved for anglers with disabilities
  • Middle and West Forks: open the Saturday before Memorial Day through the last day of February, with their own gear rules
  • Washington freshwater license and a catch record card for steelhead and salmon

Salmon seasons on the Grays Harbor rivers are set each year with the tribes, and in-season changes are common.

~2-2.5 hrs from Seattle; ~40 min from Olympia; ~25 min from Aberdeen

Fly shops

  • Puget Sound Fly ShopTacoma

Camping: Schafer State Park sits on the East Fork with a campground and river frontage, a good base for the fall runs. Elma and Montesano have motels, fuel and groceries.

Schafer State Park gives bank access and a launch on the East Fork, with another launch near Decker Creek. On the main stem, Double Bridges launches by Highway 12, near the gauge, and Fuller Bridge launches near the mouth. A Discover Pass is needed at the state park, and the WDFW launches need a parking pass, so check current rules.
