Davis Lake sits at about 4,400 feet south of the Cascade Lakes, a shallow lake formed when a lava flow blocked Odell Creek. It covers some 3,000 acres when full, though drought years shrink it a good deal. It is fly fishing only, barbless, and catch and release for trout, which grow into large native redbands on the lake's rich insect life. Largemouth bass, put in illegally, have no limit.
The fishing is in the channels and the weed edges: damsels, callibaetis and leeches from a float tube or a pram, near the Odell Creek channel and along the lava dam at the north end where the water is deeper and cooler. The shallow lake warms quickly in summer, so spring and fall fish best, and the level depends on the winter's snow.
