About Van Duzen River

The Van Duzen is the last big tributary to join the Eel, coming in near Alton about 14 miles above the ocean, and it is a wild winter steelhead river and not much else. Only the bottom 24 miles or so are open — from the Eel confluence up to the end of Golden Gate Drive near Bridgeville. The rest of the drainage, including the upper river where a tiny run of summer steelhead holds through the warm months, is closed all year. What defines the Van Duzen is its rock. The 429-square-mile basin is soft, slide-prone Franciscan formation, and the river carries one of the heaviest sediment loads in the country. It goes to chocolate milk with the first real rain and stays dirty long after the Mad and the South Fork Eel have greened up.

When it does come in, it is a small river you can cover on foot. Most good days fall between about 900 and 300 CFS on the Bridgeville gauge, on the drop after a storm. Above 1,200 CFS it is usually still off-color, and by 1,500 it is too muddy to bother. A small bump can fish again in 2 to 4 days, but a big storm takes a week to 10 days to clear — the February 2025 peak of 11,500 CFS took about that long. Swing a sink-tip with a short leader and a #4 to #1/0 marabou or Green-Butt Skunk through the tailouts, go darker and bigger on the first green day, and drop to smaller, sparser flies as it clears. Nymphing an egg with a small black stonefly behind it works in the softer slots. The fish run 4 to 10 pounds and nearly all of them are wild, so plan on releasing everything you hook.

The season is shorter than the calendar suggests. CDFW closes the river whenever the Bridgeville gauge drops below 150 CFS from Sep 1 on, which usually holds it shut until the first big rain, and the river itself closes after Mar 31. In 2026 it went into a low-flow closure on Mar 17 and never reopened. Access is the Highway 36 corridor: Fisher Road near Carlotta, Van Duzen County Park, and Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park. Below Carlotta most of the bank is private ranch and gravel-bar land. The river sees a fraction of the Eel's or the Smith's pressure, but the handful of good runs near Grizzly Creek fill up on a green January weekend. Check the CDFW low-flow page before you drive, and if the Van Duzen is still brown, the Eel at Scotia or the South Fork usually clears sooner.

Species

  • Winter Steelhead
    Primary · Dec-Mar (peak Jan-Feb) · 4-10 lbs, a few to 12+

ESA Threatened (Northern California DPS). Nearly all wild, with the adipose fin intact, and must be released. Hatchery fish are rare. Fish enter with the first big rains in late Nov or Dec. A separate run of summer steelhead, under 150 adults in most counts, holds above Bridgeville in water that is closed all year. Leave them alone.

  • Chinook Salmon (fall run)
    Seasonal · Oct-Dec · 10-25 lbs

ESA Threatened (California Coastal ESU). Catch and release only. They spawn mostly in the lower river and Yager Creek, and early fish are often dark. Not a fly target here.

  • Coho Salmon
    Rare · Nov-Jan · 6-10 lbs

ESA Threatened (Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast ESU). No take. Release any coho at once without taking it from the water.

  • Resident Rainbow Trout
    Common · Late May-Jun · 6-12"

Most of these are juvenile steelhead, and wild fish must be released. The summer season is artificial lures with barbless hooks only, and summer flows fall to 10-30 CFS with warm water, so it is a poor trout fishery.

  • Sacramento Pikeminnow
    Common · Summer · 8-18"

Introduced to the Eel drainage and a predator on young salmon and steelhead. Takes nymphs and small streamers in low summer water.

3 reaches

Lower Van Duzen

WadeSteelhead · Salmon

Wide, braided gravel-bar water across the Alton and Hydesville flats, from the Eel confluence up to the mouth of Yager Creek. Riffles and channels move around after every big flood, and the deeper runs sit tight against the banks. Most of the shoreline is private ranch and gravel-mining land, so you get in near the Highway 101 and Highway 36 bridges at Alton or where a road reaches a bar. Yager Creek itself is closed all year.

Best for: Fresh winter steelhead pushing in from the Eel on the first green days after a storm. Fall Chinook salmon hold and spawn here, but they are catch and release only.

Carlotta to Grizzly Creek

Wade & FloatSteelhead

The core of the river. Above Carlotta the valley pinches into a redwood canyon of boulder runs, bedrock ledges and real pools. Fisher Road, just west of Carlotta, gives bank access and is the only practical drift-boat launch, and only at moderate flows. Goat Rock is the pool most locals would name first. The Chalk Bluffs pools take a walk through the redwoods on the north bank. Van Duzen County Park (Pamplin Grove and Swimmers Delight) and the Highway 36 turnouts cover the rest. Above Goat Rock the canyon gets steep and hard to reach.

Best for: Wild winter steelhead on a swung sink-tip through the tailouts, or nymphs in the softer slots, from Dec through Mar as the river drops back toward 900 CFS and greens up.

Grizzly Creek to Bridgeville

WadeSteelhead

Smaller canyon water through second-growth and old-growth redwoods, from Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park up past the Bridgeville gauge to the end of Golden Gate Drive, where the open water stops. Pools at the Grizzly Creek mouth, boulder runs and short riffles, all reached from the park and Highway 36 turnouts. It sits above Yager Creek and the worst of the slide country, so it can clear a little ahead of the lower river. The easy access makes it the most crowded stretch on a good weekend. Everything upstream of Golden Gate Drive is closed all year.

Best for: Winter steelhead that have pushed upriver, usually Jan through Mar, fished on foot from the state park.

Best seasons

Jan-Feb is the core of the wild winter run and gives the most dependable green-water windows. Mar brings fresh and spawned-out fish until the river closes after Mar 31. Dec can produce the first fish, but early storms often blow it out or leave it under a low-flow closure. Fish the drop from about 900 to 300 CFS at Bridgeville. Above about 1,500 CFS it is too muddy. It clears slowly because of its heavy sediment load: 2 to 4 days after a small rise, and a week to 10 days after a big storm. Overcast days 5 to 10 days after a big storm are the best bet. Below about 200 CFS the water is low and clear and the fish spook, and below 150 CFS CDFW closes it. The gauge reports no water temperature.

From the gauge record

Over the last 30 years, April and May had the most fishable days, by flow alone, leaving winter out.

October 26 was near the middle of the last 11 years for flow on that date.

Regulations

Open only on the main stem from the Eel River up to the end of Golden Gate Drive near Bridgeville, from the fourth Saturday in May through Mar 31. Barbless hooks always. Wild trout and steelhead are released, Chinook are catch and release, and coho are no take. A 150 CFS low-flow closure at the Bridgeville gauge applies from Sep 1.

  • Open area: main stem from the Eel River junction to the end of Golden Gate Drive near Bridgeville, about 4,000 feet above the Little Golden Gate Bridge
  • Season: open from the fourth Saturday in May through Mar 31. Closed Apr 1 through the fourth Friday in May
  • Fourth Saturday in May through Sep 30: only artificial lures with barbless hooks
  • Oct 1 through Mar 31: only barbless hooks (bait allowed)
  • Bag limit: 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead per day, 4 in possession. Hatchery fish have a healed adipose fin clip. Release all wild trout and steelhead
  • Chinook salmon: catch and release only
  • Coho salmon: no take
  • The Van Duzen above the end of Golden Gate Drive and all tributaries, including Yager Creek, are closed all year
  • Low-flow closure (14 CCR 8.00(a)(4)): the open reach closes when the gauge near Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park (USGS 11478500, Van Duzen River near Bridgeville) is below 150 CFS. It applies Sep 1 through Apr 30, which in practice means Sep 1 through Mar 31
  • California sport fishing license and a Steelhead Report and Restoration Card are required to fish for steelhead

Rules cited from the 2025/2026 California Supplemental Sport Fishing Regulations, 14 CCR 7.40(b)(40)(B)1 (Eel River drainage, Van Duzen River). CDFW decides low-flow status every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and posts it by 1 p.m. at wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Inland/Low-Flow/North-Coast. It works from flow forecasts, so the river can stay closed for a day or two after the gauge crosses 150 CFS. Check the page the day you plan to fish.

Getting there

Fortuna, CA

15 min from Fortuna to Carlotta, 30-45 min from Eureka to Grizzly Creek, about 5 hrs from San Francisco. Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) is about 1 hr away.

Fly shops

  • Mad River TackleArcata

Camping: Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park has a small campground on Highway 36 that stays open most winters (confirm with State Parks). Van Duzen County Park has the Swimmers Delight campground and the Pamplin Grove group camp. Motels and services are in Fortuna, and Humboldt Redwoods State Park on the Eel is about 30 minutes south. Bridgeville has no services.

Below Carlotta most of the bank is private ranch and gravel-bar land, so stick to the bridges, county park and posted public spots. Fisher Road is the only real drift-boat launch, and only at moderate flows. Day-use fees apply at Grizzly Creek and the county park. Highway 36 is narrow and winding with winter slides. Banks are slick and muddy after storms, and poison oak is everywhere. There is no fly shop on the river, so pick up flies in Arcata.
