About Redwood Creek

Redwood Creek is the small steelhead stream that runs out of Redwood National Park and meets the ocean at Orick. It drains about 280 square miles of steep, rain-fed Coast Range hills with no dam and no hatchery, so the winter steelhead here are all wild, mostly 4 to 8 pounds, and in practice every one goes back. The legal water is short: from the mouth up to Bond Creek, roughly ten miles, and CDFW shuts all of it whenever the Orick gauge reads under 300 CFS. The live gauge and the NOAA forecast on this page are the reason to look here first. They tell you whether the creek is open, and whether it will still be open by the weekend.

The fishing comes down to the drop after a storm. The creek rises and falls fast, but it clears slowly, because decades of logging-road erosion left fine sediment through the channel, and it stays off-color days longer than the Smith. In late December 2025 it peaked at 11,600 CFS at Orick, fell to about 1,400 CFS ten days later, and was under 1,000 CFS by mid-January. Roughly 500 to 1,500 CFS with a green tint is the window. A dry spell then pulls it under the 300 CFS line in a few weeks, which happened on February 6, 2026. Through Orick it runs flat between flood-control levees. Above Prairie Creek, inside the park, it turns into braided gravel bars, riffles and log jams, and that is the better fly water. Swing a light sink-tip and a dark leech, or drift an egg with a stonefly nymph under an indicator in the softer seams. It is wade-only water. A drift boat has no place in the legal reach.

Few people fish it, and almost nothing is written about it. No shop or guide publishes a Redwood Creek report, and the regional columns mention it only on the low-flow open-or-closed list, so you will be scouting runs on your own. Most Humboldt steelheaders drive past it to the Smith, the Mad or the Eel, which means a good drop can leave you alone on the gravel with the elk. Plan on late December through March, and in a normal winter expect six to ten fishable weeks at most. Steelhead, coho and Chinook here are all listed as threatened. Keep fish wet, and stay off the spawning gravel in January and February. Check the CDFW low-flow page before you drive.

Species

  • Winter Steelhead
    Moderate · Late Dec-Mar · 4-8 lbs, a few to 12+

Wild Northern California steelhead, federally listed as threatened. The Prairie Creek Hatchery closed in 1992 and nothing is planted, so the hatchery bag limit is a formality: release every fish. They move in on each storm after the bar breaches and spawn from January into April.

  • Chinook Salmon (fall run)
    Rare · Closed · 10-25 lbs

Wild California Coastal Chinook, federally listed as threatened. No salmon may be kept on Redwood Creek. The run comes in October through December and spawns before most of the steelhead season, so release any fish you hook at once.

  • Coho Salmon
    Rare · Closed · 4-10 lbs

Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast coho, threatened under the federal and California Endangered Species Acts. No take anywhere in California. Park surveys counted 193 live spawners in winter 2017-2018 and 93 the next winter. Release without lifting the fish from the water.

Orick Levee Reach

WadeSteelhead

The last 3.4 miles, from the lagoon at the beach up to the Prairie Creek confluence. The Army Corps straightened and leveed this channel after the 1955 and 1964 floods, so it is flat sand-and-gravel runs between grass levees, with few obvious features. Fresh steelhead stack here on the first push after the bar breaches. The 200 yards at the mouth open January 1 through March 31 to artificial lures with barbless hooks only. Above that, barbless hooks and bait are legal, so expect a few gear anglers. Walk the levee tops from town or start at the US 101 bridge by the USGS gauge, and check that a levee access point is open to the public before you use it. Some ground behind the levees is private pasture, so stay on the levee or the gravel.

Best for: Bright winter steelhead just in from the ocean. Swing the tailouts and the few slots, or nymph an egg under an indicator when it is low and green.

Park Reach

WadeSteelhead · Salmon

Prairie Creek up to Bond Creek, about six miles of braided gravel bars, long riffles, log jams and a few deeper bends under the redwoods. All of it is inside Redwood National Park and public. It is the better fly water and clears a little ahead of the levee reach. The Redwood Creek Trailhead on Bald Hills Road puts you on the creek, and the trail follows it upstream. The park pulls its summer footbridges before the rains, so in winter you fish the trail side and do not try to cross. Artificial lures with barbless hooks only. Bond Creek is the top of the legal water, and everything above it is closed all year. Coho and steelhead spawn here in January and February, so keep off the redds on the tailouts.

Best for: Swinging a light sink-tip and nymphing the soft seams for wild winter steelhead on the drop, with elk on the gravel more often than other anglers.

Late December through February is the core, with March still good until the March 31 close, though many fish are spawning or spent by then. These flow numbers are estimates from the Orick record and from rivers of similar size, not from a local guide: about 500 to 1,500 CFS at Orick on the drop is the window, 300 to about 400 CFS is legal but low and spooky, and above about 2,500 CFS it is brown and unsafe to cross. It drops fast but clears slowly, so expect about a week after a big storm before it fishes. A string of small storms that holds it in the window is the best case. A long dry spell closes it. The Orick gauge reports no water temperature. Before the first big rains of late fall the creek sits under 300 CFS and closed.

From the gauge record

Over the last 30 years, March and April had the most fishable days, by flow alone, leaving winter out.

October 26 was the 3rd lowest flow for that date in the last 11 years.

Regulations

Wild steelhead, released in practice. Open from the mouth to Bond Creek only, with barbless hooks. The steelhead season effectively runs until March 31, and the 200 yards at the mouth open only on January 1. Bait is allowed only between the mouth zone and Prairie Creek. Everything above Bond Creek is closed all year, and CDFW closes the creek whenever the Orick gauge reads under 300 CFS.

  • Within 200 yards of the mouth: open January 1 through March 31, artificial lures with barbless hooks only
  • 200 yards above the mouth to Prairie Creek: open the fourth Saturday in May through March 31, barbless hooks, bait allowed
  • Prairie Creek to Bond Creek: open the fourth Saturday in May through March 31, artificial lures with barbless hooks only
  • Redwood Creek and its tributaries above Bond Creek: closed to all fishing all year
  • Tributaries below Bond Creek, including Prairie Creek, are open only the fourth Saturday in May through October 31, so they are closed during steelhead season
  • The bag is 2 hatchery trout or steelhead, but nothing is planted here, so every wild fish must be released
  • No salmon may be kept. Coho are closed to take statewide.
  • Low-flow closure (14 CCR 8.00(a)(7)): mouth to Bond Creek, closed whenever flow at USGS 11482500 at the US 101 bridge in Orick is under 300 CFS, September 1 through April 30
  • CDFW posts low-flow status on Monday, Wednesday and Friday by 1 p.m. at wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Inland/Low-Flow/North-Coast
  • California sport fishing license and Steelhead Report Card required

A reading back above 300 CFS does not reopen the creek on its own. Wait for the CDFW status update, which can also keep it closed on a falling creek above the line. Redwood National and State Parks add no fishing rules of their own, but gravel-bar camping on the creek above McArthur Creek needs a backcountry permit. Regulations are 14 CCR 7.40(b)(77) and 8.00(a)(7) from the 2026 booklet. Confirm them against the current one.

Fly shops

  • Mad River TackleArcata

Camping: Elk Prairie and Gold Bluffs Beach campgrounds in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park are a few miles north. Backcountry gravel-bar camping on Redwood Creek above McArthur Creek, by NPS permit. Orick has a few small motels and RV parks. Full services in Arcata, Eureka or Crescent City.

Orick has gas and a small store but no tackle for fly anglers, so stock up in Arcata. The Redwood Creek Trailhead on Bald Hills Road is free and reaches the park reach. The Tall Trees Access Road permit only reaches closed water above Bond Creek, so it is no use for fishing. Levee access in town crosses near private pasture, so confirm a point is open to the public before you walk it.
