About Lake Taneycomo

Lake Taneycomo was a warm-water lake until Table Rock Dam went in upstream in 1958. Now the cold water released from the bottom of Table Rock makes the 22 miles of Taneycomo, through Branson, a trout lake, and it fishes more like a big tailwater than a lake. Water temperature stays in the 40s and 50s all year near the dam, and the state stocks rainbows every month and browns once a year.

Everything turns on the generation schedule at Table Rock Dam. With no generation, the upper lake below the dam drops and slows, and the trophy area from the dam to Fall Creek can be waded; when the turbines run, it rises fast and becomes boat water. That trophy area is flies and artificial lures only, with a protected slot for rainbows, and it is where the big fish live: midges, scuds and sowbugs fished small and deep are the staples, with streamers when the water moves. Check the release schedule before every trip, and never wade without knowing it.

Species

  • Rainbow Trout
Abundant · Year-round · 12-16" common, larger in the trophy area

Stocked monthly. In the trophy area from the dam to Fall Creek, every rainbow from 12 to 20 inches goes back.

  • Brown Trout
    Common · Oct-Mar · 16-24" common, 30"+ possible

Stocked yearly and growing large on the cold water. 20-inch minimum, and only 1 in the 4-fish limit.

Best seasons

Year-round, because the dam keeps it cold. Fall and winter bring the browns up and the crowds down. The release schedule matters more than the season: low water for wading the trophy area, moving water for boats and streamers.

Regulations

Managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, with a flies-only trophy area below Table Rock Dam. Confirm the current rules before fishing.

  • No fishing within 760 feet below Table Rock Dam
  • From that closed zone to the mouth of Fall Creek: flies and artificial lures only, pole and line only, no soft plastics or natural or scented baits, and every rainbow from 12 to 20 inches must be released
  • Brown trout: 20-inch minimum, and the daily limit of 4 trout may include only 1 brown
  • Upstream of the US-65 bridge, a Missouri fishing permit and a trout permit are needed to fish for any species
  • Porous-soled waders, such as felt, are not allowed
  • Trout you keep must have head, tail and skin on

Table Rock Dam can release without warning. Check the generation schedule from the Corps of Engineers before you go, and leave the water if it starts to rise.
