The Firehole is a small geyser-fed river that runs entirely within Yellowstone National Park, flowing about 21 miles north from the Madison Plateau through the Upper, Midway, and Lower Geyser Basins before joining the Gibbon at Madison Junction to form the Madison River. It is the most unusual trout stream in the Lower 48 — thermal inflows from hot springs and geysers raise the water temperature well above what trout normally tolerate. The result is a river that's too warm to fish for most of the summer but produces concentrated insect activity during the short spring and fall windows when temperatures drop into the fishing range.

It fishes as a meadow stream in slow runs and weed beds between the geyser basins. Walk-and-wade only, fly fishing only, almost entirely catch-and-release for rainbow and brown trout. The signature hatch is the White Miller caddis (Nectopsyche) — found in vast numbers almost nowhere else — along with PMDs, BWOs, and midges. Fish average 10-14 inches with occasional larger browns; the draw isn't trophy fish but the experience of casting to risers in front of erupting geysers.

Seasonal access is unusual. YNP opens the river on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend (late May) and it fishes well through early July. As summer heat and geothermal input push water temps above 70°F, fishing slows dramatically and the river effectively closes itself by mid-July through Labor Day. It opens again in September with cooler weather and continues into the Park closure on the first Sunday of November. A YNP fishing permit is required — Wyoming state license is NOT valid in the Park. West Yellowstone, MT is the standard base camp, with Blue Ribbon Flies, Madison River Outfitters, and Bud Lilly's all within five minutes of the Madison Junction entrance.

Species

SpeciesAbundanceBest SeasonSizeNotes
Rainbow TroutCommonMay-Jul, Sep-Oct10-14"Wild population. Catch-and-release only under Park regulations. Most numerous species in the lower meadow sections.
Brown TroutCommonMay-Jul, Sep-Oct12-18"Catch-and-release only. Larger fish hold in the deeper bends and around inflow plumes. Pre-spawn aggression in October makes streamer fishing productive.
Brook TroutCommonMay-Jul, Sep-Oct8-12"Five-fish daily limit, no length restriction (an exception — most YNP trout waters are C&R). Concentrated in side channels and the upper reaches above Old Faithful.

Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through early July (PMD/caddis windows), then September through early November (cool weather, fall BWO, brown pre-spawn). Avoid mid-July through August entirely — water temperature regularly exceeds 70°F.

Sections

3 sections on this river

Madison Junction to Firehole Falls

WadeBrown Trout · Rainbow Trout

About a mile of fishable water below Firehole Falls where the river enters its final reach before joining the Gibbon to form the Madison. Accessed via the one-way Firehole Canyon Drive that branches off the main road just south of Madison Junction.

Best for: Rainbow trout and brown trout on caddis, PMDs, and BWOs. Late May through early July and September-October.

Firehole Falls to Biscuit Basin Bridge

WadeBrook Trout · Brown Trout · Rainbow Trout

The primary Firehole fishing section — approximately 10 miles of meadow water between Firehole Falls and the Biscuit Basin Bridge. River is visible from the road with numerous pull-offs and parking areas. Slow runs and weed beds between the geyser basins; classic Firehole experience casting to rising rainbow trout and brown trout next to erupting hot springs.

Best for: Rainbow trout and brown trout (catch-and-release) and brook trout on dry flies — White Miller caddis, PMDs, BWOs, midges. Best late May through early July and September-October.

Above Old Faithful (Firehole Bridge to Madison Plateau)

WadeBrook Trout · Rainbow Trout

The river reopens to fishing about 1.5 miles upstream of Old Faithful at the Firehole Bridge. Smaller water with mostly brook trout in the upper reaches. The closed reach between Biscuit Basin Bridge and Firehole Bridge protects the Upper Geyser Basin.

Best for: Brook trout (5-fish limit) and occasional rainbow trout on small dries and nymphs. A quieter alternative to the heavily-fished lower meadows.

Regulations

Current fishing rules and restrictions

YNP fishing permit required (Wyoming state license is NOT valid in the Park). Fly fishing only. Rainbow and brown trout are catch-and-release only; brook trout have a 5-fish daily limit. Barbless hooks required. Closed section from Biscuit Basin Bridge to the Firehole Bridge above Old Faithful protects the Upper Geyser Basin.

  • YNP fishing permit required — 3-day, 7-day, or season options available at all Park entrances and visitor centers
  • Fly fishing only — no bait, no spinning gear
  • Rainbow and brown trout: catch-and-release only
  • Brook trout: 5-fish daily limit, no length restriction
  • Barbless hooks required throughout the Park
  • Closed reach: Biscuit Basin Bridge to Firehole Bridge above Old Faithful (year-round)
  • Park season: Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through the first Sunday in November

Water temperatures over 68°F trigger ethical-fishing closures and many anglers self-impose a hot-water shutoff in early July. Verify the Park's posted temperature notices before fishing in late June or July. The river ENDS inside the Park at Madison Junction — there is no fishable Firehole outside the Park boundary.
